STANDARD ORGANIZATIONS – OVERVIEW

STANDARD ORGANIZATIONS 

Standard Organizations are the one who will be developing the standards in any technical field for the adoption, where some standards becomes mandatory to be codes and regulations.

Standard Organization are most commonly differentiated into

  1. International Standard Organizations
    • International Organization for Standardization (ISO)
    • International Electro technical Commission
    • International Telecommunication Union
  2. Regional Standard Organization ( Standards Developed for Individual Region)
  3. National Standard Bodies (NSBs) ( Standards developed per each country, NSB should be a member of ISO)
  4. Standard developing organizations (SDOs) (Standards are developed for industry based for each technicality)

Here are some most popular SDOs that are used in the piping industry for references:

  • ANSI – American National standards Institute
  • API – American Petroleum Institute
  • ASME- American Society of Mechanical Engineers
  • ASTM – American Society of testing and Materials
  • BSI- British Standard Institute
  • DIN – Deutsches Institute for Normung
  • NACE International
  • NFPA – National Fire Protection Association
  • AISI – American iron and steel institute
  • AWS – American Welding Society
  • AWWA – American Water Works Association
  • MSS – Manufacturer standardization society
  • ASA – American Standard association
  • OISD – Oil Industry safety directorate
  • TEMA – Tubular Exchanger Manufacturers Association

Each Organizations have some sub standards and codes that are followed based on the requirement of the project.
